When the past won't stay in the past
Trauma has a way of staying with us long after the event itself has passed. You might find yourself startled by things others don't notice, avoiding situations that feel vaguely threatening, or feeling disconnected from yourself and the people around you. Perhaps certain memories or feelings seem to appear out of nowhere, or you've noticed that your reactions sometimes feel bigger than the situation seems to call for. Some people find they can't really explain what's wrong — just that something doesn't feel right inside, and hasn't for a long time.
These are not signs of weakness. They are signs that something happened that was too much to process at the time — and that your mind and body are still trying to keep you safe.
How I work with trauma
Working with trauma requires particular care and patience. I work relationally, which means the therapeutic relationship itself is central to the healing process — you can't process difficult material in a space that doesn't feel safe, so building that safety comes first.
Rather than pushing you to revisit painful memories before you're ready, we work at a pace that feels manageable — developing trust, building your capacity to stay grounded, and gradually creating the conditions in which deeper healing can happen. You set the pace. I follow your lead.
My approach draws on Relational Transactional Analysis and psychodynamic thinking, alongside a deep respect for how the body and mind hold difficult experience together.
I offer face-to-face trauma therapy in Horsham and online sessions across West Sussex and the wider UK.
