When worry has become a way of life

Perhaps it's been so long since you felt truly calm that you've stopped noticing how much energy anxiety takes up. You're always slightly braced for something to go wrong. Your mind runs ahead of you, rehearsing conversations, anticipating problems, scanning for danger that may never come. On the outside you might look like you're coping — holding things together, keeping up — while on the inside you're exhausted by the effort of it.

Anxiety can feel like a fundamental part of who you are. It isn't. And it is possible to relate to yourself and the world differently.

   What anxiety can look like

Anxiety shows up differently for different people. You might recognise some of these:

  • Persistent worry or a sense of dread that's difficult to switch off, even when things are objectively fine
  • A mind that races at night, making it hard to sleep or to settle
  • Health anxiety — a preoccupation with physical symptoms or a fear that something is seriously wrong with your body
  • Social anxiety — dreading social situations, worrying about how you come across, replaying interactions afterwards
  • Panic attacks — sudden, overwhelming waves of fear accompanied by physical symptoms that can feel frightening and out of control
  • Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) — a background hum of worry that touches everything, without one specific cause
  • Physical symptoms like tension, headaches, a tight chest, or a churning stomach
  • Avoiding situations, people, or decisions because the anxiety they bring feels unmanageable

Whatever form your anxiety takes, it is telling you something. Therapy is a space to understand what that is.

How I work with anxiety

My approach is rooted in Relational Transactional Analysis, drawing also on humanistic and psychodynamic thinking. Rather than focusing only on managing symptoms in the moment, we work together to understand where your anxiety comes from — the early experiences, the beliefs about yourself and the world, and the patterns that developed to keep you safe but may now be keeping you stuck.

This isn't about giving you a list of techniques to follow. It's about creating a genuinely safe, collaborative space where you can begin to understand yourself more deeply — and, over time, find that the anxiety no longer needs to work so hard.

I offer face-to-face anxiety therapy in Horsham, West Sussex, and online sessions across the UK.
